Do You Need to Insure Your Engagement Ring? A Practical Guide

It's an easy thing to overlook after a proposal, but insuring a diamond ring properly is worth sorting out early — not after something happens to it.

Does home insurance already cover it?

Often only partially. Most UK home contents policies include a single-item limit — commonly somewhere between £1,000 and £2,500 — above which an individual item like a ring won't be fully covered unless you specifically list it. If your ring is worth more than that limit, the excess simply isn't covered in a claim.

What a specialist valuation gives you

A proper written valuation, carried out by a qualified valuer, documents the ring's materials, diamond specification (carat, colour, clarity, cut) and current market value. This is what most insurers will ask for to add the ring to your policy or take out standalone jewellery insurance. It also matters for:

  • Getting a fair like-for-like replacement if the ring is lost, stolen or damaged beyond repair
  • Resolving disputes quickly, since the specification is already documented
  • Estate planning or resale, years down the line

Standalone jewellery insurance vs adding it to home insurance

Specialist jewellery insurers often work directly with the diamond and gem specification on your valuation, rather than a rough estimate, and some will cover accidental loss (dropping it down a drain, losing a stone from a claw setting) which general home policies sometimes exclude or limit.

Keep it in good condition either way

Insurance covers loss and damage, but everyday wear — loosening claws, thinning shanks, worn prongs — is something regular check-ups catch before a stone is lost altogether. We'd always recommend having any ring inspected every 12-18 months. Our repairs and servicing team can check claws, re-tip prongs, and re-polish as needed.
